PEORIA, Ill. (KWWL) -

David Damm, who was serving a life sentence for the murder of Waterloo teenager Donnisha Hill, has died.

Damm was serving his sentence at Pontiac Correctional Center in Illinois, but has recently been at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria on medical furlough. He had a history of illness.

A spokesman for the Illinois Department of Corrections says Damm died at 1:18 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at the age of 67.

13-year-old Donnisha Hill was kidnapped in 2006 after getting off at the wrong bus stop and found dead in Illinois the next day.

Her family said the kidnapping and murder happened after police told David Damm he was being investigated for sexually abusing Donnisha.

Damm's wife Cathy said over the phone that he died of a heart attack.  She says they don't defend what he did, but he was a father and a grandfather, and they deserve their time to mourn him.

Damm had been hospitalized numerous times. His most recent hospitalization began December 4.
