Six Iowa schools won a combined $30,000 in technology awards for participating in “Hour of Code”, an initiative to teach computer coding in schools.

English Valleys Jr/Sr High School in North English will get a $10,000 award. The award was given based on how the school planned to implement at least one hour of computer coding into the student curriculum this week for every grade level.

Five more schools were awarded $4,000. Those schools include Sawyer Elementary School in Ames, Corning Elementary School in Corning, Aurora Heights Intermediate School in Newton, MOC-Floyd Valley High School in Orange City and Postville Community School District in Postville.

All of the awards will be used for the purchase of any form of instructional technology needed by each school. The awards were sponsored by Code.org, Google and the Governor's STEM Advisory Council.

According to the Governor's STEM Advisory Council, nearly 50 Iowa schools registered and more than 10,000 Iowa students are taking part in “Hour of Code” between December 8 – 14.
