Iowa City swim lessons will change to a new schedule in January

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

You may notice swimming lesson changes in Iowa City at the beginning of the new year.

Swimming lessons offered through the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department will go to a new six-week schedule.

The change will allow students to take just one lesson a week, and is expected to offer greater convenience and flexibility for class members, their parents, and swim instructors.

Students who prefer to maintain the twice-weekly schedule may do so by signing up for two classes.

Before, lessons were being offered twice-a-week and aquatics supervisor Matthew Eckhardt says it was difficult for families to maintain.

Eckhardt says the change also gives a bonus for program instructors, giving them them an opportunity to teach more than one class and also allow more swim instructors to teach lessons, increasing the number and variety of swim classes that can be offered.

Registration for the first swim lesson session, which runs from the end of January through the first week of March, begins Wednesday, Dec. 10, while registration for the second session, scheduled the second week of March through the end of April, will not open until Feb. 23. The lessons will continue to be Red Cross-certified.
