NORMAL, Ill. (KWWL) -

The UNI Panthers just took too long to kick it in gear. Illinois State built a large early lead, and took it to the end as the Redbirds ended the Panthers' season 41-21.

The Redbirds built up a 24-0 halftime lead behind a pair of touchdown passes from Tre Roberson. On the other side of the field, the UNI offense struggled, leading Mark Farley to replace Brion Carnes with Sawyer Kollmorgen at quarterback for the final 30 minutes.

Kollmorgen led UNI's first scoring drive in the second half. After a fumbled exchange at the 2 yardline, the ball bounced right in to his hands as he ran in, capping a 75 yard drive, and pulling the Panthers within 17.

Illinois State responded, however, as Roberson tossed his 3rd touchdown pass of the game. The Redbirds added a field goal to take a 34-7 lead in to the 4th quarter.

Soon after, though, they would get hit with the turnover bug. The Panthers forced 3 of them in the final 15 minutes, and the UNI offense capitalized.

David Johnson made it a 34-14 game about 3 minutes in to the 4th with a 2 yard touchdown run. After an ISU fumble, the Panthers scored again 34 seconds later as Kollmorgen hit Brett LeMaster on a 20 yard touchdown pass to pull UNI within 13. That's where they would stay, however.

Illinois State capped the 4th quarter with a Roberson to James O'Shaughnessy touchdown connection as the Redbirds put an end to the Panthers season.

UNI finished 9-5 overall, winning 6 of their last 7 games.
