Top ranked UW-Whitewater rallies past Wartburg late 37-33

Posted: Updated:

Number 5 Wartburg nearly pulled off the stunner. However, #1 Wisconsin-Whitewater rallied from a 17 point deficit, scoring 21 straight to stun the Knights 37-33.

The Knights built up a late 33-16 lead behind a great effort on both sides of the ball.

A late turnover on top of an injury to starting quarterback Logan Schrader appeared to be the turning point in the game. Moments after a UW-Whitewater touchdown, Schrader lost the ball on an exchange as the Warhawks recovered deep in Wartburg territory.

Soon after, UWW's Matt Behrendt hit Derric Janakin for a 23 yard touchdown strike. In just 2:01, Wartburg's 17 point lead had been cut to 3.

The Knights moved the ball well on their next drive, but on a long completion to Robbie Anstoetter, Schrader would take a shot to his legs, and although he returned late in the game, the hit clearly affected his performance down the stretch.

Meanwhile, the Warhawks would complete the rally as Behrendt hit Justin Howard on a 23 yard touchdown strike to lead 37-33 with 6:10 remaining. The Knights final 2 offensive possessions would stall out.

Taylor Jacobsmeier led the UNI effort with 181 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. Schrader passed for 358 yards and 1 score, while Brandon Domeyer led the rushing attack with 111 yards and 1 touchdown.

The Knights end the season at 12-1, the first 12 win season in school history.
