On Saturday, Dec. 6 at 3:41 a.m. there was a fire at 725 Danbury St. NE, in Cedar Rapids.

Reports indicated the homeowner, Steve Russell, 33, ran back into the house that had heavy flames coming out.

Russell, along with his wife, two children, and cat all escaped unharmed.

Passing cab driver Wade Swiftbin, age 37, saw the fire and alerted sleeping residents allowing them to escape to safety.

On arrival the first engine company observed the entire backside of the house engulfed and extension into attic area.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department made a fast attack on exterior fire and quickly worked inside with the help of other crews to look for extension, which was found in attic area above the ceiling.

Other responding units used salvage covers and other equipment to protect interior belongings and minimize damage.

Crews were on scene for nearly two hours overhauling and extinguishing hot spots throughout.

There was extensive damage to back of house, some interior smoke damage, and extensive damage to attic area and roof.
