Wrestling Match: Big Win for Parker Poor

Posted: Updated:
ELGIN (KWWL) - The crowd cheered in Parker Poor's honor Thursday night at North Fayette Valley, as it was a special wrestling match between two eastern Iowa boys.

Poor is in his first year of wrestling. He attends Turkey Valley Community School, and had his first match Thursday. Poor has a chromosome abnormality, so his cognitive ability isn't like other people's developmental skills.

His opponent on the mat was Gunner Rodgers, who turned Poor's first match into something many will remember.

The match started out like any other, but then, things shifted; Poor began gaining the upper hand. In the end, Rodgers voluntarily gave up the win.

"It was awesome. I got a lot of high-fives and congratulations for doing such a good thing," Rodgers said.

Rodgers father, Clint Rodgers, is also Poor's teacher at Turkey Valley. Rodgers decided to record the match, which has gotten thousands of views on social media.

"The support has been unbelievable, the comments people are putting out there, it touched a lot of people's hearts," Rodgers said.

Poor came to victory, and Rodgers believes he did, too.

More than 8,000 people have viewed the wrestling match video on Facebook, in less than 24 hours.
