SOLON (KWWL) -

An Ely woman is dead, and her passenger was taken to an Iowa City hospital after their vehicle turned into the path of an oncoming Solon school bus.

Patricia Howell, 73, of Ely was killed after state troopers say she turned into the path of a school bus driven by Jerry Lindemann, 75, of Solon, according to an Iowa State Patrol crash report.

Howell's passenger, Bunyan Howell, 75, also of Ely, was transported by Lifeguard air ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, according to the report.

Both had been wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Howell had attempted to turn her Ford Fusion east onto Ely Road from Highway 382 and turned into the path of the Solon school bus, which was westbound and carrying around 30 children.

Four of the children on the bus sustained minor injuries, according to the report. Lindemann was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, the Linn County Sheriff's Office, Solon Fire, Ely Fire, the Johnson County Secondary Road Department and Johnson County Ambulance.

Students were transferred to a different bus and taken home, officials said.

"Our first priority is always the safety of our students and we were deeply concerned about those children who were on the bus at the time of the accident," said Solon superintendent Sam Miller.

Miller said in a release that counselors would be available at Lakeview Elementary to provide support for students and families.

School officials at Solon said there were "no major injuries" to students or a bus driver after a school bus crashed Thursday.

Solon district officials are asking parents not to pick up their children from their school after the crash.

The district posted a statement saying the request was due to the intersection still being blocked off.

The full statement is below:

Attention Solon families:

After school today, Bus #1 was involved in an accident on the intersection of Ely Road and Highway 382 West. We ask that parents do NOT attempt to pick-up their children at this time as the intersection is blocked off.

We believe all students and the bus driver have not experienced major injuries, however as a precautionary measure all are being assessed by emergency personnel on scene. Students will be transferred to a different school bus and continue on the route as soon as personnel on scene have assessed all involved in the incident.

If your child seems distressed and needs additional attention, please contact the building office and/or counselor.
