IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

A few eastern Iowa mayors competed for a good cause this holiday season.

Iowa City Mayor Matt Hayek, Coralville Mayor Pro-Tem Mitch Gross and North Liberty Mayor Amy Nielsen have signed on for a little city-to-city bell-ringing competition to help spur donations for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Program.

Each mayor spent some time at the kettles Wednesday, encouraging shoppers to drop donations into their community kettle.

The mayor who earns the distinction of raising the most money will be awarded a Red Kettle to keep in his or her community until the next Kettle Challenge.

Mayor Hayek, who is serving as the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign Chairman this year, will also accept a $5,000 donation from the Coral Ridge Mall Scheels store at noon.

The Iowa City Salvation Army serves more than 18,000 meals and has over 50,000 social service contacts each year for needy families throughout Johnson County.

They provide food, temporary shelter, furniture, clothing, bussing vouchers, disaster relief, a warming center, and many other services. The holiday season is a particularly busy time of year for the organization.
