CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

For a few hours Wednesday night, gas at the Music Station in Cedar Falls dropped to $1.99.

Some called it a mark of a time long-gone.

“I know, I love it!” said Jeff Oberheu, topping off his Jeep.

Word spread fast, leading to some congestion at the pumps.

“When we heard, we figured out which car had the least amount of gas in it and hustled over here,” Oberheu said. “Made it just under the wire.”

“I can remember the last time gas was under two dollars and I think it was in third grade,” said Darian Everding, waiting in line in her car.

The sale only lasted for a few hours, until a little after 6 p.m. Presumably, sales were at a loss.

“It's not ever bad standing out in the cold for these kind of prices,” Oberhau said.

Then, fuel went back up into the $2.50-$3 range.

The brief fuel frenzy, said Music Station employee Blake DeVore, wasn't about the cash. It's about celebrating history.

“20 years ago today the store opened,” he said. “Everybody was pretty excited, so I think it was a good idea.”
