BREMER COUNTY (KWWL) - The early winter weather has put several construction projects on hold, including the C33 bridge in Bremer County.

The Bremer County engineer said the bridge reconstruction was supposed to be done in October. However, the snow and ice that came earlier than usual has brought the construction to a halt.

Angie Buttjer and her family live about a mile down the road from the C33 bridge. She said her husband's commute is much longer with the unfinished construction.

"He works in Cedar Falls so instead of just going three miles to the highway, he has to go all the way through town, which probably takes an extra 15 minutes," Buttjer said.

The bridge closure not only affects Buttjer and her husband, but also her son's bus route.

"With the construction, he doesn't get home until 4:40, and they get out of school at 3:10."

Buttjer said her son is in kindergarten in the Waverly-Shell Rock School District, and said an hour and a half for a five year old is a lot of time on a bus.

The transportation director for the district said the construction impacts five bus routes, particularly three. Anywhere from five to 10 miles are added to each route.

Buttjer said she's had her son stop taking the bus, and for the rest of the neighborhood's sake, hopes the bridge reopens soon.

The Bremer County engineer expects the C33 bridge to reopen in early spring of next year.
