CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

From Dec. 10-12, students from seven elementary schools in the Cedar Rapids Community School District have the chance to learn about basic computer programming and coding skills during the "Hour of Code" events.

Third- through fifth-graders have the opportunity to travel to the Iowa StartUp Accelerator in the Geonetric building to learn from Coder DoJo.

Each one-hour introduction to computer science is designed to show students a few programming basics and provide exposure to code.org, a resource students and staff can continue to use after the session.

The coding event is being held as part of Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 8-14.

“The Hour of Code is happening in the heart and soul of the entrepreneurial and high-tech community,” said Trace Pickering, Associate Superintendent. “It's also right next door to the Iowa BIG program space. Some of those students will be assisting.”

Participating schools include Grant, Coolidge, Pierce, Johnson, Harrison, Kenwood, and Van Buren elementary schools.
