GRINNELL (KWWL) - Grinnell College has established a new scholarship for Iowa residents after receiving a $4 million bequest from a deceased alumnus.

The Dorrit Walsh Endowed Scholarship Fund, which establishes an annual scholarship awarded to students who have live in Iowa for five or more years, was made possible by a $4 million dollar bequest made by the late Marilyn Walsh.

Walsh, a native of Woodbine, moved to New York City after graduating from Grinnell College in 1950. She worked full-time while taking night classes at New York University where she earned her bachelor of laws, master of laws in taxation law and her MBA.

Walsh was a tax attorney for a Wall Street firm before joining the tax section at CBS where she eventually became the director of taxes and assistant treasurer.

“A passionate leader who broke through the glass ceiling in her field, Marilyn Walsh embodied the Grinnell Pioneer spirit,” Grinnell President Raynard S. Kington said in a written statement. “Her generous gift demonstrates her desire to invest in our students, and to reinforce the College's longstanding commitment to access and excellence.

“The Dorrit Walsh Endowed Scholarship Fund will help make a Grinnell College education affordable for generations of Iowa's most promising high school graduates by ensuring that they receive robust financial aid packages,” Vice President for Enrollment Joe Bagnoli said in a written statement. “Grinnell remains one of relatively few colleges in the country that considers students for admission without regard to the resources of their families and that meet the full financial need of all admitted students. Gifts like this make it possible for Grinnell to continue its tradition of providing access to one of the finest liberal arts colleges in the United States.”

Iowa residents applying to Grinnell College will be automatically considered for the scholarship. The Admission and Financial Aid Office will then follow up to ensure that candidates are five-year residents of Iowa.
