Iowa universities certified as military-friendly

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The University of Northern Iowa has been designated a Home Base Iowa Certified Academic Military Partner (CHAMP), according to the Governor's office. Also added -- Iowa State University, the University of Iowa and Hawkeye Community College.

The CHAMP program allows Iowa colleges to certify their ability to educate and assist veterans on campus. The be certified, they must meet criteria for on-campus vets resources, easing transitions and financial considerations.

"The announcement of additional Home Base Iowa Certified Higher Academic Military Partners ensures service members transitioning to civilian life have welcoming communities, educational resources and jobs - all here in Iowa," said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.

"We are constantly striving to provide an environment that fosters support and success for our veterans and their families," said Julia Heuer, coordinator of UNI's Military and Veteran Student Services. "Collaboration is key, and this is a great start in committing educational and state resources to support those who have served."
