22 tons of hay stolen from Nashua zoological farm

The owner of an eastern Iowa zoo and farm is trying to figure out how to feed her animals after more than 22 tons of hay was stolen off the property.

Amanda Slessor owns and operates THR Zoological Farm near Nashua.

She says she was putting away one of her tractors when she noticed hay missing from one of her barns.

She estimates 30 round bales, weighing approximately 1,500 pounds apiece, were stolen.

She says she believes the thieves came over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend when everyone was gone.

"They mean the world to me, and you would think that anybody would know me would know how hard I work," Slessor said. "If it's somebody I knew who did this, how could they do it? Shame on them, especially on Thanksgiving."

She says whoever did steal the hay would have had to bring in some hefty equipment and manpower to carry it all out.

"If it wasn't a big semi, then it would have had to have been a couple trucks and trailers and took quite a bit of time if it wasn't just one haul and a big semi," said Slessor.
