Iowa City police are investigating after two cab drivers were robbed over the weekend, one at gunpoint.

The first one happening Saturday night just before 8 near the intersection of Bradford Drive and Baker Street.

According to police, the driver picked up two men downtown, who asked to be dropped off in the Bradford Dr. and Baker St. area, on the southeast side.

Once they got there, one of the men demanded money by threatening the driver with a handgun.

There was a fight, the driver wasn't hurt, but the robbers ran off with cash.

The driver told police one of the robbers was a short black man, believed to be in his early 20's with a medium build, medium complexion and short black hair.

He was wearing a dark colored jacket and brandished a dark colored handgun.

The second suspect was described as a taller black male, with a thin build and medium complexion and black hair. He wore a grey hoodie and is believed to be in his early 20's.

About 6 miles away and 7 hours later, another cab driver was robbed near Mormon Trek Boulevard and Petsel Place..

Two passengers, a man and woman wanted to be dropped off near just before 3 o'clock Sunday morning.

When they arrived, the driver turned to collect the fare and the female allegedly sprayed the driver with what's believed to be pepper spray.

The two robbers got out the cab without paying the fare and ran toward the Pheasant Ridge Apartment Complex.

The female suspect is described as being black, in her mid-20's, approximately 5'8"-6' tall, weighing between 180-200 lbs, wearing an afro hair style and dressed in all black.

The male was described as black, 6' tall, 170 lbs, with a slender build, short hair, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a red baseball cap.

The victim did not see the suspects display any weapons during this attack, but did have minor injuries.

Lindsey Hudson has been a taxi driver for less than a year and says these two robberies unfortunately show the  dangers of the job.

"You have to be able to read people, caution, and knowing your surroundings," said Hudson. "There are dangers, you really have to watch who gets in the cab and take certain hints.

She says Friday and Saturday night's are typically what she calls "watch-out" nights where she looks for hints when it comes to potential criminals getting in her taxi.

"If someone's going to rob you don't fight back. Give them what they want, get them out of the cab, call the police," said Hudson.

Iowa City police are investigating both robberies, but at this point don't know if they are connected.

If you have any information on either of the robberies, you're asked to call Iowa City CrimeStoppers: 319-358-TIPS (8477).
