CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

David Johnson scored 4 times as UNI hammered Stephen F. Austin 44-10 in the opening round of the playoffs. The margin of victory was the 2nd largest ever for the Panthers in a post-season game.

The rout began early as Johnson took the handoff on the first play from scrimmage, busted through the line, and then outran the defense for a 74 yard touchdown and a quick 7-0 lead. UNI also used a pair of first quarter turnovers to their advantage, as Michael Schmadeke would capitalize hitting 3 field goals in the first 10 minutes.

Late in the first quarter, Johnson scored his second touchdown of the game on a one yard run. It was also the 47th rushing touchdown of his career which set a new UNI all-time mark.

After a touchdown run by SFA's Gus Johnson, UNI's David Johnson responded with another highlight reel touchdown. Johnson took a screen pass from Brion Carnes, juked a couple defenders, and raced 70 yards to give the Panthers a 30-7 halftime lead.

He capped his night with a 6 yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter. Johnson finished the game 236 total all-purpose yards (152 rushing, 84 receiving).

Brion Carnes added the finishing touch with a 22 yard scamper in the 4th quarter.

UNI advances to face 5th seeded Illinois State next Saturday in Normal, Illinois.
