Iowa wrestlers win 11th straight over ISU 28-8

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -  Iowa dominated the lower weights as the top rank Hawks defeated #15 Iowa State 28-8. The win was the 11th straight for Iowa in the rivalry.

The Hawkeyes opened the meet winning 5 consecutive matches. Brandon Sorenson, the 4 time high school state champ from Denver-Tripoli, needed an escape in the final minute to scrape by Gabe Moreno at 149 pounds.

Iowa, however, didn't manage any bonus points until the 184 pound match. Sammy Brooks ended that streak with a 9-1 major decision over Lelund Weatherspoon.

The highlight for Iowa State came at 197 pounds when 3rd ranked Kyven Gadson caught Kris Klapprodt in a cradle and turned him for a 3rd period pin. Gadson, however, was deducted a team point for gesturing at the Carver Hawkeye crowd after the match.

Iowa returned the favor at heavyweight as Bobby Telford picked up a fall over Quean Smith in the 3rd period.
