WATERLOO (KWWL) - A Waterloo family is still trying to pick up the pieces after a fire destroyed their home in early November.

The fire forced the two Lewis children to jump out of second story windows.

Their mother, Christina Lewis, was sent to Iowa City Hospitals and Clinics with both smoke and burn injuries.

She is still in the hospital recovering.

"When I woke up, I opened the door and there was a whole stairwell full of fire," says her son, Elijah Lewis.

Elijah is one of the twins who escaped the home fire unharmed.

"I was nervous and scared. I felt like I was dreaming. I never thought of this."

"Elijah says he jumped out of a second story window and landed on his back porch.

He wanted to go back inside to save his sister but she had already jumped out of another window.

The twins ran down the street to their cousins house to call 911.

But when fire rescue arrived, their mother was still trapped in the home.

"Her lungs got really damaged in this so they have the breathing tube on her, they're trying to get her to breathe on her own again," says her aunt, Susan Williams.

Williams says Lewis also needs skin grafts.

The first round didn't take so doctors are trying again.

"She's fighting right now, she's fighting to be here for her kids."

While most families come together for turkey and conversation, this family is hoping they don't lose their mother.

Her children are staying with other family members until she can leave Iowa City in January and enter rehabilitation treatment at Covenant.

"We're just doing what we need to do to keep her spirits up, we don't want her to have to worry about anything."

Williams says Christina's fiance has been spending every day with her at the hospital.

She says because of her lung injuries, Christina cant speak yet, but her fiance plans to marry her as soon as she can say I do.
