WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Federal Food and Drug Administration is rolling out new guidelines for calorie labels on prepared food.

Starting next year, the organization with require vending machines, fast food menus and movie theater concessions to display calorie counts.

The catch -- it only applies to chains with more than 20 locations.

Katie Squires is a registered dietitian at a Waterloo Hy-Vee. She said the new regulations could be a good call.

"I think it can mean a lot of different things," she said. "I think it will create an opportunity for customers to be more informed about the choices they make.

It could have a big impact on your life, too -- Americans consume a third of their calories outside the home.

The new guidelines should be in place by mid-2015.
