CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - Authorities are still investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed an area home this morning.

Cedar Falls fire rescue says when they arrived the fire was burning underneath the home.

But it quickly spread, viewer Brandon Odell posted a video on our Facebook page this morning where you can see smoke extending far beyond the home and actually flames rising from the roof.

Despite the circumstances, James Ledtje says he certainly has something to be thankful for today.

He said typically dogs like his pet Brutus get a bad reputation but if it weren't for him, today could have turned out a lot differently.

Early Thanksgiving morning, Brutus became a hero.

"I got woke up around 5:30 by him jumping on my chest," homeowner James Ledtje says. "I seen the fire, I tried putting it out, I got the inside one put out, then I realized the smoke was coming out of the floor. I went outside and realized the fire was underneath, that's when I knew I needed to call somebody."

A viewer video shows his house engulfed in smoke and flames.

The fire started underneath the home but authorities say it spread quickly, consuming it.

The Cedar Falls fire chief says the home had no smoke detectors.

"Love my dog." notes Ledtje.

If it weren't for Brutus, he may have not woken up.

"Pit bulls get a bad rep, but he's a really good dog" Ledtje clarifies.

What's next for Ledtje?

"Just be here with my family and figure something out."

Ledtje says when Brutus woke him up this morning he could tell the dog was very worried.

Authorities say if it weren't for Brutus, it could have been the difference between life and death.
