Thanksgiving Eve brings many to area bars

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Thanksgiving Eve is a big day out at the bars,  one of the biggest party nights of the year.

Many family and friends are meeting up at bars because so many don't have anything to do Thanksgiving morning.

"Wednesday before thanksgiving for me is a big day," said bar goer Edwin Alvarado. "Just trying to be a couch potato, no. Come out and enjoy the night. It's a great time."

Since most people have the night off and no obligations the night before Thanksgiving they say it's time to kick it all off.

"Tomorrow is about family, today is about friends," said Jennifer Stephenson. "Every year, almost every year, I come out to dance and have a good time."

However, Cedar Rapids Police tell me every year they have to put a cork in party-goers having too much fun.

"We have stepped up patrols for this evening also. If you are out driving around, you are going to see a higher presence from out department," said Captain Jeff Hembera of the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

Hembera says that means drink safe.

He says it's vital that you have a designated driver, and if that's not going to work call a cab.

"Statistically thanksgiving is a higher number of fatalities related to OWI than New Years Eve," said Hembera.
