WATERLOO (KWWL) - A person of interest in a fatal stabbing in Waterloo Tuesday night was arrested on charges of assault at the very same house that a man was later stabbed to death.

Martez Deroy Smith, 45, of Waterloo was arrested Tuesday night on charges of domestic abuse assault of a woman at 1826 West 3rd St. on Tuesday around 5:40 p.m., according to Waterloo Police.

According to the criminal complaint, Smith's victim alleged that Smith called her a name, grabbed the back of her neck and pushed her into a child's doorway gate, causing it to break.

The victim came away with scrapes and broken nails, according to police. Smith left the residence before police arrived and refused to talk to an investigator about the incident, according to the report.

The victim and Smith had apparently been living together for four years. It is Smith's third arrest for domestic abuse.

Police were later called to that same address on a report of a stabbing and found Shawonyta Norman, 39, with a stab wound to his chest.

Norman was taken to Covenant Medical Center where he later died.

Smith is a person of interest in Norman's murder but not officially a suspect, according to Waterloo Police. He is being held in jail on the domestic abuse charge.

No details have been confirmed by police on why Norman was at the address.
