State Patrol reminds drivers to be smart during holiday travel period

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Iowa State Patrol is warning holiday travelers as many people begin to visit friends and family for Thanksgiving.

Increased traffic in the state can lead to more collisions and traffic delays.  Troopers want to remind drivers to buckle up, obey speed limits, avoid distractions, and to get a designated driver if you're impaired.  Officials say wearing your seatbelt can increase your chance of survival in a crash by 50%.

With winter weather here, drivers should have adequate levels of fluids in your vehicle, and at least half a tank of gas. Check your car battery often and check your tire pressure regularly. Pack blankets and warm clothing, ice scrapers, a shovel, jumper cables, flashlights and a phone charger if you get stranded.
