WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Waterloo Police have arrested a man after they say he beat a puppy in the head.

Nathan Jacob Sawvell, 32, of Waterloo was arrested Saturday at his home for animal torture, according to Waterloo Police arrest records.

Officers were called to West 8th Street on a report of an injury to an animal. According to Waterloo Police, the incident occurred at 341 Cutler St., which is Sawvell's address, according to the arrest report, but the animal did not belong to Sawvell.

Waterloo Police investigators say the dog was a terrier mix about 6 months old, and is still alive.

According to the complaint, Sawvell is accused of causing an eye injury and a possible broken tooth to the dog, which also had dried blood on its neck.

Sawvell is charged with one count of cruelty to an animal, which is an aggravated misdemeanor, according to investigators. That charge carried a maximum penalty of two years in jail and a maximum fine of $6,250.

Sawvell was still in the Black Hawk County Jail on a cash bond of $5,000 as of Monday.
