Mason City elderly get Thanksgiving meal after all

Posted: Updated:

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Volunteers have held an annual Thanksgiving meal for the elderly after having to scramble when health officials objected to a food preparation plan.

This year's free Mason City Senior Citizens Thanksgiving Dinner was canceled after the Cerro Gordo County's public health department learned last week that part of the meals would be cooked in homes and then brought to the Senior Activity Center. The free event is usually held the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports the dinner's sponsors had to cancel when they couldn't find another location in time.

But several groups, including the Mason City Knights of Columbus, teamed up to make sure the dinner went on.

On Sunday, volunteers helped serve turkey, ham, potatoes, stuffing and pies for the dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
