Wartburg holds on for 37-31 playoff win over St. Thomas

Fifth ranked Wartburg is headed to the second round of the playoffs after a back and forth 37-31 win over #20 Saint Thomas.

Brandon Domeyer ran for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Knights victory.

Wartburg appeared to be en route to an easy victory early on, rushing the ball nearly at will on their first two drives. The Knights took a 13-0 lead in to the second quarter after touchdown runs from Domeyer and quarterback Logan Schrader.

The Thommies, however responded with back to back touchdowns in the second. Wartburg would respond with Domeyer scoring on a 3 yard run to take a 20-14 lead at half. Kicker Michael Bohlke would expand that lead with a 25 yard 3rd quarter field goal.

After the Knights and Thommies traded touchdowns on their next 2 drives, it would come down to a 4th quarter battle of wills. Saint Thomas quarterback John Gould threw one up for grabs, while his receiver Charlie Dowdle pulled it down with a defender draped on his back for a 48 yard touchdown. That score cut the Knights lead to 30-28 with 9:24 remaining.

Wartburg came right back with a big drive capped by the play of the game. On 3rd and goal from the 10, Schrader eluded multiple defenders in the backfield, then hit Will Ebert in the endzone. Ebert took a big blow, but still managed to make the catch to make it a 2 score game with 4:30 left.

Again, Saint Thomas responded capping a long drive with a Paul Graupner field goal to cut the deficit to 6 with 52 seconds remaining. The Thommies then recovered the onside kick in Wartburg territory. That's when Logan Pitz played the role of hero. The Knight defensive back intercepted Gould's pass in the final seconds moving the Knights to the second round.
