IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

As a reminder, the city of Iowa City wants residents to clear more than just sidewalks and driveways.

For safety, city crews are asking property owners and/or tenants who live on corner properties to clear curb ramps and crosswalks at intersections for the safety of pedestrians.

Children, parents with strollers, the elderly, people in wheelchairs or walkers, along with those who are mobility-impaired, need to have a safe and clear area as well.

City crews ask that snow around fire hydrants be cleared too, to help make it easy to access in a emergency.

Shovel a two-foot path around the hydrant in all directions to allow access by Fire and Water Departments.

You should also keep snow from accumulating around storm drains.

In order to make sure the drain is open and able to quickly move water away from streets, parking lots and other properties when the snow begins to melt, snow must be cleared.

Keeping the drains open also reduces the risk of having melting snow refreeze when the temperatures drop.
