Sheriff's Office: Scammer calls, claims to be a loved one

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON COUNTY (KWWL) - The Washington County Sheriff's Office has received several reports of a scam that's targeting the elderly.

They say scammers have been calling elderly people, claiming to be a grandchild or a loved one; while on the phone, the caller claims to be incarcerated and in desperate need of money, but asks them to keep quiet about it because they don't want others to find out that they're in trouble with the law. Then, another person will get on the phone, claiming to be an officer or deputy telling them to buy a gift card or pre-paid debit card to pass on to the loved one so they can be released.

Once the targeted person buys a debit card, they're asked to call the "officer" back and give them the information from the card.

Those with the Sheriff's Office say to be aware of these types of situations with on the phone and to check in with any elderly friends and relatives so make sure that aren't the target of a scam.

Remember to never give out personal information over the phone.
