Thousands of gallons of manure spills into Fairfield creek

FAIRFIELD (KWWL) -

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources say a tanker accident caused thousands of gallons of manure to spill into a creek.

The DNR says a Porter Farms manure tanker went into a field three miles south of Fairfield along 25th Street Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

They estimate 3,000 gallons of manure sloshed into an unnamed creek that is a tributary to Cedar Creek.

The DNR says the unnamed creek was dammed and the contaminated water was pumped to apply on Porter Farms land.

They say pond water is being used to flush the creek, and that liquid will also be pumped and land applied.

The DNR says it will be hard to determine how many fish were killed in the creek.

They say no contaminated water left Porter Farms property.

Cedar Creek was not affected.
