Football championship creates ghost town

REINBECK (KWWL) - The Iowa High School Football State Championship is underway, with its first round of games Thursday.

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School football team played at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, and drew hundreds of fans. Therefore, the town of Reinbeck seemed more like a ghost town Thursday.

The high school let out early for the game; so students, staff and much of the town headed to Cedar Falls, leaving empty parking spaces and "Closed" signs on doors of downtown businesses. The town's grocery store also closed for several hours.

Tom McLean, however, stayed behind to help prepare a pork loin dinner for the team and town Thursday night.

"Takes about three, four hours to get everything done," McLean said, co-owner of PT Grillers.

He spent Thursday afternoon at the grill rather than at the game, with tongs instead of tickets in hand.

"Makes me feel so good to be a part of it without being there."

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels ended up losing Thursday's game 28-24, but nevertheless, enjoyed a warm welcome home after a dedicated season.
