Big Hawkeye sports weekend means parking changes for fans

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) - It's an exciting time to be a Hawkeyes fan -- but a complicated time to try and park your car.

Saturday, the football team takes on Wisconsin, and a win could help the team advance to the Big Ten league championship.

It's a home game, which always means the parking lot will be full of fans who start showing up Friday.

This weekend also brings the Hawkeye Challenge, where the women's basketball team -- ranked 18th in the country -- is playing on Friday and Saturday.

Kinnick Stadium and Carver-Hawkeye Arena use some of the same parking lots -- and that creates some complications.

Certain parking lots are designated for football fans and will not be open for basketball fans: Lots 40, South Lot 75, 43 North (RV areas only), 43 West and 43 NW.

Friday, there's specific lots that basketball fans can use that shouldn't be loaded with early football tailgaters, available  after 3:30 p.m.

- Lot 46 – for women's basketball fans with WB46 parking passes

- ADA Parking - the east section of North Lot 75 (south of Carver-Hawkeye Arena, across Hawkins Drive)

- Lot 33 (no designated spaces for ADA)

- Public parking (free of charge) – North Lot 75, Lot 65 (Finkbine Commuter), East end of Lot 33 (north dental lot), and 43 North (non-RV areas)

Saturday will be trickier. Same restrictions for basketball fans. There's still lots basketball fans can use, and if you show up after football ends, you'll probably have better luck:

- Lot 46 – for women's basketball fans with WB46 parking passes (after 6 p.m.)

- ADA - the east section of North Lot 75 (after 6 p.m.) and west section of Lot 33 (as space becomes available when football parking exits)

- Public Parking: Newton Road Parking Ramp (hourly rate will apply), a limited number of spaces will be available in Lot 65 / Finkbine Commuter (after 3:30 p.m.), Hawkeye Commuter Lot – complementary parking and shuttles will be available from 3:30 p.m. until one hour after the conclusion of the Iowa women's basketball game.

Good news for people going to the football game -- there are no additional restrictions for you, but keep in mind there may be more cars in your usual lot.
