WESTGATE (KWWL) -

Recently laid-off John Deere workers have a chance to find new employment Thursday, with a job fair at the Waterloo Center for the Arts.

The company said the layoffs were a response to the current market demand for their products.

We spoke with one recently laid off worker.

She's going to the job fair, and she's no stranger to fighting tough battles.

Sarah's troubles began when she was diagnosed with sarcoma in 2010.

"It's very rare. Its a tissue cancer, it typically affects arms, legs," she says.

The tumor was on her spinal cord.

Sarah underwent radiation treatment and chemotherapy at the same time.

"A lot of this is radiation damage, its not actually the scar," she says.

But then, a change in luck.

Sarah was just finishing cancer treatment when she got a surprise phone call.

"I was on a three month check up when Deere called me that day and said I had the job."

Both Sarah and her husband worked the overnight shift at Deere, so her husband's grandma took care of their three daughters.

Grandma says she loved being their babysitter, "we would rock out...we would turn the radio on as long as we could go."

In October, Sarah found out she was one of more than 400 Deere workers being laid off.

Now that Sarah doesn't have a job to go to, she spends most of her time at home.

While she gets to work on her hobbies like baking, she'd rather be working for a paycheck.

"We both worked there, now with just him working there that's a big income cut."

"I hope she finds a job that pays better than Deere! But i don't that that's possible!" Tyler says.
