WAVERLY (KWWL) -

A Waverly group is holding a silent auction to raise money to fight poverty.

Self-Help International (SHI) will host the auction online here: www.biddingowl.com/Auction/home.cfm?auctionID=2933&CFID=6138933&CFTOKEN=26865952. Items include Nicaraguan pottery, Ghanaian wood carvings and more.

"According to the World Food Programme (WFP), almost 13 percent of the population in the world's developing countries is undernourished," the group wrote. "Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45 percent) of deaths in children under five -- 3.1 million children each year. If women farmers had the same access to resources as men, the number of hungry in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million."

SHI also sponsors the CROP Hunger Walk.

Group representatives say the auction can make a big impact in people's lives.

"An auction purchase of $50 will allow one woman to start her own small business through a micro-credit loan," a representative wrote. "A $75 purchase will provide a training session for one woman in how to make jams, jellies, and marmalades. The funds raised through this auction will help alleviate hunger by enabling and empowering women with the skills and capital they need to escape the cycle of poverty."

Questions can be directed to SHI at 319-352-4040.
