CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Paramedics in Cedar Falls saved three heart attack victims on Tuesday.

“These incredible outcomes were not possible without the assistance of bystander initiated Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and great pre-arrival instructions given by the 911 dispatchers at Black Hawk Consolidated Communications Center” said Fire Chief John Schilling.

Officials said the happy outcomes were a result of passers-by delivering CPR. They list several key points to success in the Cardiac Chain of Survival:

    • Immediate recognition of cardiac arrest and activation of the emergency response system

    • Early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with an emphasis on chest compressions

    • Rapid defibrillation

    • Effective advanced life support

    • Integrated post-cardiac arrest care

“It is a real team effort” said Fire Chief John Schilling. “It takes bystanders to recognize the emergency and call 911.

"Black Hawk 911 dispatchers to utilize Emergency Medical Dispatch pre arrival instruction protocols which direct bystanders how to perform CPR. Cedar Falls Police are equipped with Automatic External Defibrillators (AED's) and Cedar Falls Fire Rescue personnel perform Basic Life Support which includes oxygen therapy and defibrillation. Sartori Paramedics are skilled in the delivery of advanced life support protocols and can administer advanced airway management, lifesaving cardiac drug therapies and the transportation of the patient to the closest hospital for the final link of Integrated Post-Cardiac Arrest Care.”

“It is this great work done by good caring first responders that can make a big difference in events like this.” said Jeff Olson, Director of Public Safety Services.
