WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

It's Rod Blum's first foray into politics, and Tuesday, he met other incoming lawmakers at the so-called 'Freshman Class photo-op' in Washington, D.C.

Blum, a Republican from Dubuque, narrowly beat Democrat Pat Murphy for Iowa's 1st District seat.

Blum said he's learning a lot in Washington.

"The phrase I would use is it's like drinking from a fire hose," he said. "Just data overload, sensory overload. I'm just absorbing it. As Governor Christy told us at our luncheon, take advantage of it while we can while everybody still likes us, because in a short time everyone will be upset with us for doing too much or too little.

He seemed happy to be dodging Iowa's frigid weather, but home was definitely on his mind as he prepares to take Bruce Braley's seat.

"It's an honor," Blum said. "I'm humbled to be here. Both my parents had 10th grade educations, and they'd be proud to see their son standing here. It's humbling."

The newly elected representatives take office in January.
