City reminds property owners of snow removal ordinance

Posted: Updated:

With the early snowfall eastern Iowans have dealt with, one city wants to remind residence of it's snow removal ordinance.

Iowa City workers say the snow removal ordinance requires sidewalks to be cleared within 24 hours after a one-inch or more snowfall, or any ice accumulation.

Property owners are responsible for the removal of snow and ice down to the concrete from all sidewalks that are next to their private property.

If the city receives a complaint about an unshoveled area, an inspector will come out, verify the violation an leave notice tag at the property.

Property owners will then get an additional 24 hours to remove the snow and/or ice.

If not completed by the deadline, the city will hire a private contractor to complete the job, at the owners expense plus a $75 administrative fee.

Tenants are advised to check their leases to see if their landlord has transferred any responsibility of snow and ice removal to them.
