WATERLOO (KWWL) -

If you're traveling with babies this winter, remember, bundles of joy can be over-bundled in your car.

Doctors at Covenant Medical Center recommend dressing babies with just one extra thin layer more than an adult would need.

One common mistake is overdressing a baby in a car seat. Doctors recommend dressing a child for a car like you would for the indoors and covering the car seat while you travel to and from the car. That's because too many layers can be a safety hazard in car seats.

"The straps of the car seat need to be directly on the baby on the inside of the clothes so if you have a big bulky snow suit, the baby should not be dressed in that and then strapped into the car seat," Dr. Andrew Barden MD said.

That bulky snow suit in a warm car could also overheat the baby, which is unhealthy.

Covering the car seat while you travel to and from the car is vital though. Barden says newborns also need to be protected from the wind because they quickly loose body heat.
