MAQUOKETA (AP) - The city manager and police chief in Maquoketa are working on a new policy that would let officers use their own semi-automatic rifles while on duty.

The city would also set up a loan program to let officers buy rifles, the Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports.

Police Chief Brad Koranda brought the idea before the City Council in September. He says the department's current rifles are old and that allowing officers to use more modern rifles give them a better peace of mind while on patrol.

He mentioned an April incident where officers were pursuing an armed suspect, who later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Koranda says officers would have been outgunned if there had been a standoff.
