Road crews busy with snow cleanup

DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) -

The first winter-like storm passed through eastern Iowa this weekend.

Dubuque County was one county that didn't get much snow with the storm.

"This is great. It's a good way to ease into the season," said Dubuque resident Garrett Mess.

On Sunday, Dubuque County road crews were busy clearing snowy roadways. Secondary Roads Supervisor Chad Danielson said earlier this month he was concerned about a shortage of workers going into the winter months. He said two men are currently out for surgery. He said the department will be understaffed until after Thanksgiving.

Jim Milner has worked for the Dubuque County roads crew for nearly three years. He said the department was able to clear roads in a timely fashion Sunday, despite having a shorter staff.

"I mean this is the first big snow we've had this year and we've made it work," said Milner.

Danielson said earlier this month he has talked to the Dubuque County Board of Supervisors about hiring part-time employees to help, but no decision has been made about hiring more employees yet.
