A fire at a hotel in Evansdale forced dozens of people out in the cold Sunday morning.

It happened at the Days Inn around 8:00 a.m.

"Smoke alarms were going off, but the whole hotel was full of smoke, black smoke," said Kelly Grigg.

Grigg was staying at the hotel when a fire forced him out early in the morning.

"Freaked me out, I realized I had to get my baby and get my family out of there. That's all that was on my mind and get them out the front door," said Grigg.

Grigg, his wife, their seven year old grandson, and two dogs made it safely and they weren't alone.

Evansdale Fire chief Kent Smock says he isn't sure how many people were inside the hotel at the time of the fire, but says 23 rooms were occupied.

Smock says everyone was able to get out safely and no one needed medical attention.

He says when they arrived smoke was so heavy it was hard to find the heart of the fire.

"Crews arrived, we found heavy smoke throughout the first and second floor and found heavy fire in the utility and laundry area," said Smock.

Smock says they aren't sure how the fire started.

He says the owner of the hotel has others in the area.

The people displaced by this fire should be able to stay at one of those hotels if necessary.
