With the first snowfall of the year comes more dangerous conditions.

One accident on Highway 218 near Orange Road in Waterloo injured three people, and left one in serious condition in the hospital.

DOT road crews spent much of Saturday evening plowing and salting highways.

"We're out on every road that we've got. We'll be here basically all night until we get the roads cleaned off," says DOT supervisor Barry Thede.

He says the DOT will send out up to 27 drivers during business hours.

He says drivers need not only to exercise caution around other vehicles, but plows as well.

He also says a lot of the time, plow drivers can't see drivers.

He says to be careful passing them, and make sure to leave enough distance between the vehicle and the plow.

"Bridges are also the first thing to freeze, and downtown areas," he says.

He says to use your best judgment when driving, and give the plows time and space to do their work.

"We're doing our best for everybody to try to get it clear, we'll keep working at it. It's a long winter yet!"
