First snowfall is the busiest for tow companies

Posted: Updated:

Living in eastern Iowa, you'd think many people would know how to drive in the snow.

However, when the streets are covered there are bound to be problems on the roads.

"The first snowfall is always absolutely insane," said Carm Darrah-Chiafos, president of Darrah's Towing. "People forget how to drive on it.  It's going to cause problems."

At Darrah's Towing in Hiawatha, they know the first snowfall of the season means hundreds of calls, sometimes too many for them to handle.

"They forget, they don't allow any extra time. They just think it's like any normal day and they get in the car drive away quickly and everybody crashes," said Darrah-Chiafos

Throughout Cedar Rapids, our KWWL crew noticed Darrah's responding to drivers slipping and others stranded.

"Nobody knows how to drive," said snow plow driver Zach Suchan. "First snowfall everybody's always a little shaken up."

Police had to shut down a portion of Edgewood Road on the southwest side because cars just couldn't make it.

Darrah-Chiafos says even the smallest amount of snow can cause driving hiccups, and that's why their passenger vehicle trucks were out.

By 10 p.m. Saturday, Darrah's had received hundreds of calls, and more than 100 people were still waiting for a tow truck.

They tell us they won't completely get caught up until late Sunday night

"Be safe out there it's going to be a long night and a long and a long winter," said Suchan.
