DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Some eastern Iowans took a dip in the Mississippi River Saturday and they actually warmed up a little bit by doing that.

More than 100 people jumped into the cold Mississippi River in Dubuque for the 17th annual Dubuque Polar Plunge. The temperature was actually warmer in the river than outside as plungers made their way into the water. On Saturday it was 23 degrees in Dubuque, while the Mississippi River was a cold 35 degrees. Organizers had to keep salt on hand just to make sure plungers didn't slip on the ice.

Money raised through the Polar Plunge will be put towards the Special Olympic Winter Games.

Organizers said this year the even raised some $40,000.
