Strong 2nd half pushes Hawks past Illini

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (KWWL) -

After a slow start, Iowa put together one of their best offensive performances of the season to take down Illinois 30-14.

Scoring was limited in the first quarter as the Hawks struck first. Strong pressure from Iowa would lead to a throw away from Illini quarterback Wes Lunt in his own endzone resulting in intentional grounding and a safety for a 2-0 Iowa lead.

Illinois, however, would go in to the lead following a Jake Rudock fumble at the Iowa 34 yard line. The Illini used the short field as Lunt hit Mike Dudek for a 34 yard score and a 7-2 edge.

That's when the Hawkeye offense took over. Rudock capped 2 long drives with a pair of touchdown passes to Ray Hamilton. Hamilton hauled in a 1 yard strike in the second quarter and a 6 yard pass in the 3rd as Iowa jumped out to a 16-7 lead.

They put it away in the 4th as Rudock scrambled for a 6 yard score. Five minutes later, C.J. Beathard entered the game for Iowa and led an 86 yard drive capped by a 19 yard touchdown pass to Damond Powell to cap a run of 28 straight points for the Hawkeyes..

Iowa's offense went for a total of 587 yards on the day. Jake Duzey hauled in 3 passes, leading the Hawks with 110 receiving yards. Mark Weisman led the Iowa ground attack going for 134 yards in the ball game.
