WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Area streets crews will be working overtime this weekend to lessen travel troubles due to the season's first winter storm.

The flashing lights on the yellow trucks are back.

Streets crews in Waterloo hit a few area roadways late Friday afternoon to prepare for the first snow of the season.

They pre-treated city bridges and overpasses with a brine mixture.

4 of the city's trucks are equipped with two 800-gallon tanks of salt brine - that uses less salt and reduces the amount of salt contained in storm water run-off.

It's good for about 3 days.

The next step - after 2 inches of snow falls, priority routes are plowed.

After 3 inches of snowfall, city trucks will tackle residential areas.

City crews only take care of city streets.

So any highways or state controlled streets like U.S. 63 in Waterloo or 1st street in Cedar Falls are plowed by the Iowa D.O.T.

The city of Dubuque also puts its plows whereabouts online here.

Each city has a different policy regarding snow removal.
