NORTH ENGLISH (KWWL) -

School staff initiated a lockdown at English Valleys Elementary after a man came into the school Friday morning claiming he had a knife.

According to the Iowa County Sheriff's Office, 28-year-old Coty Schwochow entered the school office at 8:40 a.m. Friday.

He told staff he had a knife and said he needed mental help, according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities say Schwochow appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Officials said school staff convinced Schwochow to leave the building, and then went into lockdown.

Schwochow attempted to "make a minor effort" to re-enter the school, according to the sheriff's office, but was unsuccessful in doing so.

Deputies arrested him several blocks from the school and committed him for a mental evaluation.

Criminal charges are pending.

No one was hurt and no students were in the school office at the time, according to the sheriff's office.

English Valley schools are A.L.I.C.E. trained, according to the sheriff's office.
