IOWA CITY (AP) -

A court is upholding a minimum 35-year prison sentence for one of two Iowa men convicted of robbing a bank and shooting two officers during an attempted getaway.

The Iowa Court of Appeals rejected 21-year-old William Clayton's argument Thursday that the punishment was too severe.

Wearing masks and armed with assault rifles, Clayton and John Mumford robbed a bank in Maynard in northeastern Iowa in October 2012 and fled by car.

During a lengthy police chase, they opened fire on police officers. A state trooper and the Sumner police chief were both shot and injured.

Both men received 50-year prison terms, with a mandatory minimum of 35 years behind bars.

The court says Clayton is an adult offender and doesn't qualify for relief from mandatory sentences recently granted to juveniles.
