Columbus school district cuts 5 teachers in budget

COLUMBUS JUNCTION (AP) - The Columbus Community school board likely will cut several teaching positions to help deal with a budget shortfall.

The district's education board approved a budget work plan at a special meeting Monday that would save around $700,000, the Muscatine Journal reports.

The proposal calls for the layoffs of up to five teachers and cutting a technician position.

Eliminating those six positions would save the district an estimated $302,000.

The plan also would cut the superintendent's salary by half to save another $60,000.

The board says the move would likely put the district's superintendent, Marlene Johnson, out of a job and open up the possibility that it would share the position with a neighboring school district.

The state is expected to make its decision on the district's plan next month.
