CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A man escaped a two-alarm fire in Cedar Rapids after being awoken by a smoke alarm.

Cedar Rapids firefighters were called to 2206 D Avenue NE at around 10:25 a.m. Tuesday for a house fire.

When they arrived, crews found smoke coming from the home. Once inside, firefighters say they came upon lots of fire and smoke.

Battalion Chief David Brown says that because there were a large amount of items inside the home providing fuel to the fire and making it unsafe for firefighters to move around safely, they were forced to fight the fire from outside the home.

Brown reports that a second alarm was then called out.

Crews were on scene for nearly four hours.
